Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 Get 4GB RAM: What the Memory Upgrade Means

Apple has quietly made a major hardware upgrade to its newest smartwatches. The newly launched Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 both come with 4GB of RAM, giving them twice as much memory as the previous-generation Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3.

The increased memory was not highlighted during Apple’s launch presentations, but MacRumors confirmed the specification through Apple’s developer tool Xcode 27. The tool lists both new Apple Watch models with 4GB of RAM, compared with 2GB in the previous generation.

The change is more significant than it might initially appear. Apple has introduced the Series 12 and Ultra 4 with the new S11 chip, a redesigned Health Sensing System and several Apple Intelligence features. The additional RAM gives these watches considerably more memory headroom for running those new experiences.

Apple has not publicly promoted the amount of RAM inside the watches, which is typical for the company. Unlike many Android smartphone manufacturers, Apple generally focuses its marketing on the overall experience and processor architecture rather than publishing RAM figures during product launches.

The 4GB figure nevertheless reveals an important change in how Apple is positioning the Apple Watch.

The Series 12 and Ultra 4 are not simply incremental fitness trackers. Apple is increasingly treating the watch as an intelligent computing device capable of handling more sophisticated workloads directly on the wrist.

Both models use Apple’s new S11 chip, which includes a 64-bit dual-core processor and a four-core Neural Engine. Apple says the S11 powers new health, fitness and intelligence features across the latest generation.

The additional RAM could be particularly important for Apple’s push into Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

With watchOS 27, Apple is bringing a more capable Siri experience to compatible Apple Watch models. Siri AI is designed to understand more personal context and provide more conversational responses, while other intelligence features can perform tasks such as summarizing information and recognizing sounds.

Apple’s new Audio Intelligence features include Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Shazam and Sound Recognition. These features are enabled by the S11 chip and its Neural Engine, with some capabilities arriving later in 2026.

RAM becomes important here because intelligent software can require considerably more working memory than traditional smartwatch functions.

A conventional smartwatch primarily needs to handle notifications, fitness tracking, sensor readings, applications and basic system functions. Apple’s newer features are more computationally demanding, particularly when the device needs to process information, maintain multiple software states or support AI-powered experiences.

Having 4GB instead of 2GB gives Apple substantially more room to accommodate those workloads.

It may also help Apple keep the new watches relevant for longer.

The Apple Watch has historically retained relatively modest amounts of RAM compared with smartphones. According to MacRumors, Apple Watch models had 2GB of RAM starting with the Series 9 generation, meaning the Series 12 and Ultra 4 represent a doubling of memory after several generations at the same level.

That could have implications for future versions of watchOS.

More RAM gives developers and Apple greater flexibility when designing applications and operating-system features. It can reduce the likelihood that applications need to reload their data when users move between tasks, while also providing more room for increasingly sophisticated background processes.

However, the additional RAM does not automatically mean that users will see a dramatic difference in everyday speed.

The S11 chip, software optimization, storage performance and individual applications all contribute to the overall experience. A user opening the Workout app or checking a notification is unlikely to suddenly notice that the watch has doubled its RAM.

The benefits are more likely to appear in demanding situations.

Apple is introducing a number of new health capabilities with the Series 12 and Ultra 4. Both watches feature the new Health Sensing System, which Apple says provides its most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable and enables higher-frequency heart-rate and heart-rate variability measurements.

Those measurements help power the new Readiness experience, which is designed to provide users with additional information about recovery and whether they may be prepared for another workout.

The watches can also collect a wider range of health information through their sensors and integrate it into Apple’s redesigned Health experience on iPhone.

Apple Watch Series 12 includes features such as ECG, heart-rate notifications, sleep tracking, sleep-apnoea notifications, blood oxygen measurements where available, temperature sensing and high-frequency background heart-rate tracking.

The Ultra 4 takes many of those capabilities and combines them with additional features designed for athletes and outdoor users.

Apple says the Ultra 4 can track outdoor workouts for up to 45 hours in its most extended workout mode and provides Apple’s most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch.

The extra RAM could therefore be useful as Apple continues adding more sophisticated processing to health and fitness applications.

Another important point is that Apple has not increased the U.S. starting prices despite doubling the RAM.

The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799 in the United States. MacRumors notes that those are the same starting prices as the Series 11 and Ultra 3, despite the new models having twice as much RAM.

That makes the RAM upgrade particularly interesting given the broader pressure on memory-component prices.

The technology industry has been dealing with a severe memory-chip shortage, which has contributed to higher memory costs and has affected pricing across a number of consumer electronics categories. Despite those conditions, Apple has maintained the same starting U.S. prices for the new watches.

For Indian customers, the latest Apple Watch models are priced higher in absolute terms.

Apple’s India store lists the Apple Watch Series 12 from ₹56,900, while the Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at ₹1,09,900. Both are available for pre-order, with availability beginning September 18.

The Series 12 and Ultra 4 also require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later, and Apple Watch remains compatible only with iPhone.

That requirement is especially relevant for users considering the new watches primarily for their AI features. The full Apple Intelligence experience depends on having a compatible iPhone, so the watch’s additional RAM does not turn it into a completely independent AI device.

Instead, Apple appears to be building a broader ecosystem in which the iPhone and Apple Watch work together.

The watch can handle certain processing locally, while other experiences can rely on the paired iPhone or Apple’s broader infrastructure depending on the feature.

This approach may become increasingly important as Apple adds more intelligence capabilities to watchOS.

The 4GB RAM upgrade could also improve app longevity. Developers often have to work within the memory constraints of wearable devices, and additional RAM can make it easier for applications to maintain more complex interfaces and data without being forced to restart or reload.

That does not mean every existing Apple Watch application will suddenly become faster. Instead, the additional memory creates additional headroom for future software.

For Apple Watch owners who upgrade every year, that distinction may not matter much.

But someone buying an Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 with the intention of keeping it for several years could benefit more from the increased memory as future versions of watchOS become more demanding.

This is one reason the RAM upgrade may be more important than it initially looks.

Apple’s hardware specifications can sometimes appear conservative compared with competing devices. Yet because the company controls both the hardware and software, it can often achieve strong performance with less memory than competing platforms.

The move to 4GB suggests that Apple now sees a reason to increase that hardware capacity.

The timing is particularly revealing.

Apple did not simply increase RAM while leaving the rest of the platform unchanged. The new watches arrive alongside the S11 chip, new health sensors, higher-frequency health measurements, readiness features and Apple Intelligence capabilities.

Taken together, those upgrades indicate that Apple Watch is entering another stage of development.

The watch is becoming less dependent on simple fitness and notification functions and more focused on continuous sensing, personalized insights and AI-assisted experiences.

The RAM increase is therefore best understood as an enabler for that transition, rather than a headline feature users should buy the watch for by itself.

If you’re deciding between an Apple Watch Series 11 and Series 12, the 4GB RAM figure alone probably should not determine the purchase. The newer Health Sensing System, S11 chip, readiness features, battery characteristics, display and other hardware improvements are more important factors.

For Ultra owners, the decision is similarly more complicated.

The Ultra 4 is designed primarily around outdoor performance, extended battery life and advanced health and fitness features. Its 4GB RAM complements those upgrades but is not the main reason to upgrade from the Ultra 3.

For developers and long-term users, however, the story is different.

Doubling the RAM from 2GB to 4GB gives Apple significantly more flexibility for future software updates. It could help the company deliver more advanced AI features, richer applications and increasingly sophisticated health experiences without immediately running into memory limitations.

And that may be the real significance of this quiet hardware change.

Apple did not spend much time discussing RAM during the launch because the company wants consumers to think about what the technology enables rather than the number itself. But the specification discovered through Xcode 27 confirms that the new watches have undergone a meaningful internal upgrade.

The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 now have 4GB of RAM—twice the memory of their predecessors. Combined with the S11 chip and Apple’s growing focus on AI, health sensing and intelligent software, the extra memory could prove increasingly valuable as watchOS evolves.

For now, most users may not notice the difference immediately.

Over the next few years, however, the additional RAM could become one of the reasons the latest Apple Watch models remain capable as Apple continues pushing more powerful features onto the wrist.
