Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market, and it has done so with a device that looks very different from the conventional iPhone. The new iPhone Duo combines a traditional iPhone experience with a large foldable display, giving users a 5.4-inch outer screen when closed and a much larger 7.6-inch display when opened.
Unveiled on September 9, 2026, iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone and one of the company’s most significant hardware changes in years. Apple describes it as the most transformational change to the iPhone since the original model, combining a new titanium design, dual displays, the A20 Pro chip, dual batteries and a redesigned iOS 27 experience.
The device will start at $1,999 in the United States, while Apple’s Indian store lists the 256GB model at ₹2,99,900. The 512GB version costs ₹3,24,900 in India, while the 1TB model is priced at ₹3,74,900. Apple has not listed a 2TB India configuration on its current store page.
For Indian buyers, that makes iPhone Duo considerably more expensive than even Apple’s premium Pro Max models. The pricing puts it firmly into luxury smartphone territory, but Apple is clearly targeting consumers who want a large-screen foldable without giving up the familiar iPhone ecosystem.
When closed, iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display. When opened, the device reveals a 7.6-inch folding OLED display, which Apple describes as the largest display ever used on an iPhone. The inner screen has a 1878-by-2670 resolution and 430 pixels per inch, while the outer display has a 1398-by-2034 resolution and 460 pixels per inch.
Both displays support ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, HDR, True Tone and a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. The inner screen also uses a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections.
Apple has approached the foldable display differently from simply placing a larger screen inside a phone. The company has redesigned iOS 27 so applications can take advantage of the different ways the phone can be positioned and used.
That means iPhone Duo can function as a conventional smartphone when closed, a large-screen device when opened and a partially folded device for hands-free activities.
Apple’s Indian product page highlights several possible positions, including book mode, tent mode and laptop-style positioning. The company is essentially treating the hinge as another way of interacting with the phone rather than simply a mechanism for making the device smaller.
The hinge itself is one of the most important engineering components in the new iPhone. Apple says iPhone Duo uses a precision hinge designed to provide a smooth opening and closing experience, while the titanium frame and hinge cover are intended to provide durability.
The phone is available in two colors: Star White and Night Sky. It uses Grade 5 titanium for the frame and hinge cover, giving the device a premium finish while helping Apple keep the structure rigid enough for a foldable design.
Despite the large internal display, Apple has managed to make the opened phone just 5.2mm thick. When folded, it measures 11.3mm thick and weighs 254 grams.
That weight is significant, but it is also understandable given the engineering required to combine two displays, a hinge, two batteries and a high-performance processor into one device.
Apple has also made the iPhone Duo IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. The company says the phone can withstand immersion to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions.
One of the most interesting changes is the biometric system.
Instead of relying on Face ID, iPhone Duo uses Touch ID. Apple has integrated a fingerprint sensor into the device, providing another major difference between the foldable iPhone and the current Face ID-based iPhone lineup.
The camera system has also been redesigned around the folding form factor.
At the rear, iPhone Duo has a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, consisting of a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main camera features a 26mm focal length, an f/1.6 aperture and sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
Apple says the main camera can also provide an optical-quality 2x telephoto experience, effectively giving users another framing option without adding a dedicated telephoto lens.
But the foldable design enables some camera features that would be difficult to achieve on a conventional iPhone.
One example is Duo Preview. When taking a photo of another person, the subject can see a live preview of the shot on the outer display. This allows them to adjust their position or expression while the photographer controls the camera from the other side.
The foldable design also allows users to capture selfies with the rear cameras while using the outer display as a viewfinder. That means users can take advantage of the higher-quality rear camera system rather than relying exclusively on a traditional front-facing selfie camera.
Apple has also introduced Smart Take, which uses on-device AI models to analyze a scene and automatically capture an image when subjects are properly positioned.
The inner display contains an under-display FaceTime camera, allowing Apple to maintain a nearly uninterrupted large-screen experience. The camera also supports Center Stage for video calls.
Video recording is equally ambitious. The rear main camera supports 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 frames per second, while Apple has added features such as Cinematic effects after capture and Audio Mix improvements.
The biggest performance upgrade comes from Apple’s new A20 Pro chip.
The processor uses a 2-nanometre manufacturing process and includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the previous generation’s A19 Pro, while the GPU can be up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient.
The chip is connected to a custom vapor chamber designed to improve thermal management.
This is especially important for a foldable phone because the large internal display could encourage users to play games, edit content and run multiple applications for extended periods. Apple says iPhone Duo can deliver up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro under its testing conditions.
The dual 16-core Neural Engine also gives the phone substantially more AI processing capability. Apple says the Neural Engine provides twice the compute power for on-device AI models.
That processing power is used throughout Apple’s software experience.
iPhone Duo supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, with the company’s redesigned AI assistant designed to understand more personal context and provide more conversational interactions. Apple says Siri AI is integrated into the new iOS experience alongside other Apple Intelligence features.
The foldable format also creates new opportunities for multitasking.
With the larger 7.6-inch screen, users can view content, work across applications and play games on a display closer to a small tablet than a traditional smartphone. Apple’s software is designed to adapt depending on whether the phone is opened, closed or positioned at an angle.
Battery life was another area where Apple needed to solve a difficult engineering problem.
Instead of using one large battery, iPhone Duo has two built-in batteries, with one positioned on each side of the folding device. Apple says the batteries work together as a single system while allowing the company to use the available internal space more efficiently.
The result is up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display and up to 44 hours when using the outer display. Apple also lists up to 24 hours of typical use when both displays are used equally.
