Lionel Messi scored and provided an assist as Inter Miami CF were held to a 2-2 draw by the Philadelphia Union in a tense Major League Soccer match at Subaru Park on Wednesday night.
The game produced four goals, several chances and a dramatic finish, with both teams ending the match with 10 players after red cards were shown during stoppage time. Messi’s goal was particularly significant as it was his first since returning to action following the death of his father, Jorge Messi.
Inter Miami made a strong start and opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Messi delivered a cross into the penalty area, and Luis Suarez headed the ball into the path of Daniel Pinter, who finished the move to put Miami ahead.
Messi then got on the scoresheet himself five minutes later. The Argentine forward cut inside onto his preferred left foot from around 12 yards and curled the ball into the corner of the net, giving Miami a 2-0 advantage.
The goal continued Messi’s impressive production in MLS. He has now recorded 13 goals and nine assists in 17 league appearances during the season, according to ESPN’s match report.
Philadelphia responded before halftime. Indiana Vassilev scored from a volley to reduce the deficit and give the home side renewed hope.
The Union continued to press after the interval and eventually found an equaliser in the 58th minute. Eighteen-year-old defender Neil Pierre headed home his third goal in five games this season, bringing Philadelphia level at 2-2.
Cavan Sullivan, the Union’s 16-year-old midfielder, was credited with his seventh assist of the season for Vassilev’s goal. His contribution was another notable moment in a match that featured several young players making an impact.
Philadelphia appeared to complete the comeback in the 62nd minute when Milan Iloski found the net. However, the goal was subsequently ruled out after a video review determined that Pierre had been offside during the buildup.
The disallowed goal kept the score level and set up an increasingly competitive final period. Both teams continued looking for a winner, but neither could find a decisive third goal.
Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos described the match as an evenly contested encounter and said his team would have preferred to take all three points. He acknowledged that Philadelphia had made Miami work hard for the draw.
The match became particularly heated late in the game. In stoppage time, Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan were both shown red cards following a scuffle away from the ball.
The two dismissals brought a dramatic conclusion to an already intense match. Despite the late confrontation, neither side was able to break the deadlock before the final whistle.
For Inter Miami, the draw came after a difficult stretch of results. The club had entered the match following a 4-1 defeat against first-place Nashville SC on Saturday. That loss ended Miami’s seven-game unbeaten run in MLS, a sequence that had included six victories and one draw dating back to May 9.
Miami had also experienced difficulties in other competitions. The club had suffered three consecutive defeats in all competitions before the Philadelphia match, including losses against Mexican opposition in the Leagues Cup.
Messi himself had played 90 minutes in the defeat to Nashville, despite missing a penalty and hitting the post twice. He also provided an assist for Telasco Segovia’s goal in that match.
His availability had been limited earlier in August because of the death of his father. Messi missed Miami’s August 8 match against Monterrey while travelling home for his father’s funeral. He later returned as a substitute against Leon on August 12, playing 45 minutes.
The goal against Philadelphia therefore marked an important personal moment for Messi as he continued his return to regular competitive football.
Inter Miami entered the Philadelphia match second in the Eastern Conference. The result left Miami with an 11-3-6 record and 39 points after 20 matches, while Nashville remained at the top of the conference with 46 points.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, moved to 5-10-5, giving the Union 20 points from 20 games. The club remains in the lower half of the Eastern Conference standings, but its recent form has shown signs of improvement.
The Union are now unbeaten in five matches, having recorded four victories and one draw during that run. Their improved form has come after Ryan Richter was appointed interim coach.
The result was particularly encouraging for Philadelphia because the team was facing one of the strongest attacking sides in the league. Miami’s squad includes several internationally recognised players, while Messi remains the central figure in the club’s attack.
The match also featured a reunion with Rodrigo De Paul absent from the Miami lineup because of a suspension for yellow-card accumulation. De Paul, like Messi, was part of Argentina’s team that finished as World Cup runners-up.
Luis Suarez also entered the game with a strong record against Philadelphia. He had scored a hat trick in Miami’s previous meeting with the Union, helping the team overcome deficits during that encounter.
The latest match was again a high-scoring contest between the sides, but this time Philadelphia managed to avoid defeat after recovering from a two-goal deficit.
For Miami, the draw prevented another loss but also extended a difficult period in which the club has struggled to maintain the consistency it showed earlier in the MLS season.
Messi’s performance nevertheless provided a positive individual highlight. His goal and assist demonstrated his continuing influence on Miami’s attacking play, while his return to the scoresheet could provide an important boost as the regular season progresses.
Philadelphia can take confidence from its response after falling two goals behind. Rather than allowing Miami to control the match, the Union scored twice and created additional opportunities before the final whistle.
The disallowed goal in the second half also showed how closely contested the match had become. A successful finish would have completed Philadelphia’s comeback, but the offside decision prevented the home side from taking the lead.
The late red cards added another layer to a match already marked by physical intensity. Both clubs will now have to manage the consequences of the dismissals as they continue their MLS campaigns.
The 2-2 result ultimately reflected a match in which momentum shifted repeatedly. Miami dominated the opening stages and built a two-goal advantage through Pinter and Messi, but Philadelphia responded strongly through Vassilev and Pierre.
Neither team could produce the decisive moment in the closing stages, leaving the points shared.
For Inter Miami, the immediate priority will be to regain consistency after a series of difficult results. For Philadelphia, extending its unbeaten run to five matches provides renewed confidence as the team attempts to climb the Eastern Conference standings.
Messi’s return to the scoresheet will remain one of the main talking points from the match. Beyond the statistics, the goal came during an emotional period for the Argentine star following his father’s death.
With the MLS season continuing, Inter Miami will look to Messi and its experienced attacking players to push the team towards the top of the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia, meanwhile, will attempt to build on its recent unbeaten run and turn improved performances into more points.
The latest meeting between the two clubs once again demonstrated the competitiveness of MLS, with a match involving one of the league’s biggest stars ending in a dramatic draw rather than a straightforward victory for the visitors.
