Bhupesh Baghel Breaks Silence on ED Raid: Reveals Cash Seized and Defends His Wealth Amid Political Storm

The recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s residence has ignited a heated political debate. The central agency, investigating a money laundering case, reportedly recovered ₹32-33 lakh in cash from his home. As speculation and allegations continue to swirl, Baghel has strongly defended himself, asserting that the entire operation was politically motivated. He also highlighted his family’s extensive agricultural background, claiming that the cash amount was not unusual for a household involved in large-scale farming.

The raid, which took place at Baghel’s Bhilai residence in Durg district, was linked to an ongoing probe involving his son, Chaitanya Baghel, in connection with an alleged liquor scam. However, the senior Congress leader rejected these allegations outright, describing them as a desperate attempt by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to malign his image. According to him, such investigations are being used as tools to suppress political opponents, especially those who challenge the central government’s authority.

The Raid and Its Aftermath

As the ED team arrived at Baghel’s residence, security was heightened in the area. Supporters of the former Chief Minister gathered outside, protesting against what they termed as the misuse of central investigative agencies. Despite the growing tensions, ED officials proceeded with their search, spending several hours inside the property.

During the raid, a significant turn of events occurred when an ED vehicle was reportedly attacked as it left the premises. Allegedly, a stone was thrown at the vehicle, leading to concerns that the situation could escalate further. While no serious injuries were reported, the ED is now considering filing an FIR regarding the incident. Baghel, however, distanced himself from the attack and stated that his supporters were provoked by the injustice being done to him.

Baghel’s Strong Defense and Allegations Against the BJP

Reacting to the raid, Baghel launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP, accusing them of orchestrating politically motivated raids against opposition leaders. He claimed that such actions were meant to create an atmosphere of fear and intimidation ahead of crucial elections. He argued that ED, CBI, and Income Tax department raids had become a pattern whenever opposition leaders raised concerns against the government.

Baghel also expressed concerns over procedural lapses in the search operation. He alleged that the ED officials did not produce a valid search warrant when they entered his house, nor did they provide an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) number when he requested it. Additionally, he was reportedly not allowed to use his mobile phone and was prevented from attending the Chhattisgarh Assembly session during the raid.

Defending the cash found at his residence, Baghel explained that his family owns and cultivates 140 acres of agricultural land, which has been their primary source of income for generations. He argued that keeping cash at home is not uncommon for farmers who deal in large-scale agricultural transactions, particularly in rural India, where cash-based dealings are still prevalent.

The Political Fallout and Congress’ Reaction

The raid has sparked strong reactions from the Congress party, which has stood firmly behind Baghel. Senior Congress leaders have condemned the move, calling it a deliberate attempt to destabilize opposition leaders. They claim that the BJP is systematically targeting leaders who pose a threat to their dominance in various states.

Congress leaders also pointed out that similar raids have been conducted against opposition figures in the past, yet there have been no such actions against BJP leaders or their allies. This, they argue, raises serious concerns about the selective use of central agencies for political gains.

Baghel’s supporters have also taken to the streets, organizing protests against the ED’s actions. In various parts of Chhattisgarh, Congress workers have raised slogans against the central government, accusing them of misusing investigative agencies to crush political dissent.

Larger Implications and the Road Ahead

The controversy surrounding the ED raid on Bhupesh Baghel is not just about one leader—it has larger political ramifications. The timing of the raid, just months before crucial elections, has fueled speculation that such actions are being strategically planned to weaken the opposition.

Baghel, however, remains defiant. He has made it clear that he will not bow down to pressure and will continue to raise his voice against what he calls “undemocratic tactics.” He has also vowed to fight any false allegations legally and politically.

The growing political tensions between the Congress and BJP in Chhattisgarh could significantly impact the upcoming elections. While the BJP argues that the ED is merely doing its job, opposition parties believe that central agencies are being used as tools for political vendetta.

This incident has once again brought into focus the broader debate about the impartiality of investigative agencies in India. Critics argue that their autonomy is being compromised, with agencies being increasingly used to settle political scores rather than conduct fair investigations.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on how both Bhupesh Baghel and the Congress party respond to these allegations. Will this raid turn out to be a major setback for Baghel, or will it strengthen his position as a leader who refuses to be intimidated? Only time will tell. However, what is certain is that this political storm is far from over, and its impact will be felt in the months to come.
